Please join us for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 14th, at 3:30 PM at the Rabun County Civic Center Diner (201 W Savannah St, Clayton, GA 30525).
Prior to the celebration, an optional graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM at the Tallulah Falls Cemetery (364 N Rock Mountain Rd, Lakemont, GA 30552), with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM.
Alton was born May 5, 1936, in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late Mary Louise (née George) and Roy Alton Wiggers. Alton was a proud 1959 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. Following graduation, he served his country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before embarking on a distinguished career as a highway engineer for the Georgia Department of Transportation. After retirement from The State of Georgia, he established his own land surveying and engineering consulting firm.
Alton and his late wife, Edith "Edie" Graves Wiggers, raised their family in Atlanta before retiring to the beauty of the North Georgia mountains. They cherished years of hosting family and friends at their Lake Rabun boathouse and on their nearby farm, where Alton could be found riding his beloved horses, tending to his chickens, working on his antique Ford tractor, and taking in any stray dog or cat within a five-mile radius. A lifelong fan of his alma mater, Alton never missed a chance to root for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and cheer against the Bulldogs.
Alton was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 56 years, Edie; and his sisters; Doris Brooks and Virginia Cushing.
He is survived by his children: son Andrew Wiggers (Nancy), daughter Michelle Wiggers, and daughter Stacy Caro (Luis). He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Simon Graves (Hunter), Mary Martha Bellassai (J.J.), Carlina Caro, Alton Wiggers, Isabella Caro, and Susan Wiggers, and two great-grandchildren, Anniston and Leo.
